The collection was formed by Edward F. Phelips and passed to Guildhall Library on his death in 1928. The Spanish material, which this leaflet covers, was placed on permanent loan in the University of London Library in 1950-51.

The collection is particularly strong in material reflecting the social and Eliot-Phelips collection. book history and urban development of Madrid, from the 16th century up to the early years of this century; it includes ‘prematicas’, laws, city ordinances, regulations of guilds, charities, montepios, etc., proposals for public works, plans, maps, street directories, guides, and histories.

The 'Eliot-Phelips' collection, formed by Edward Phelips (–), was added to the Private Case in Charles Reginald Dawes bequeathed approximately volumes in Smaller donations were also made by Beecher Moore, Alfred Rose (–) and Dr Eric Dingwall, also an honorary curator of the Private Case.

The week July witnessed the fifth International T.S. Eliot summer school at the Institute of English Studies, University of London. The Eliot-Phelips Collection also contains the copy of the edition of Olmo's Relacion used by Miñano in preparing his edition and notes and by the printer in casting-off the text.
